I arrived at work this morning (thankfully, as it transpires, a few minutes early) to switch off the engine and remain seated in the drivers seat for five or so minutes longer to the rest of an item on the Today programme. Last week, James Naughtie and Sarah Montague took DNA tests to establish whether they were *morning* or *evening* people today they had the results back. These seem to prove what they had always suspected that James was a morning person, and a light sleeper, and that Sarah was actually an evening person and a heavy/sound sleeper. This made me wonder what kind of person I am? Certainly, for the last I don’t know how many years, I have been rising early to go to work (so that I can leave early) – currently my hours are 8 till 4:15 but I also do have trouble getting from the lying cozy in bed to getting up on two legs again, and I do sleep well and soundly.
This is where the interesting bit comes. Apparently it has been proven that it is very much easier for evening people to adapt to a morning way of life than for a morning person to adapt to an evening way of life…
I think that’s true, because I’m and evening person and have managed to adapt to a morning way of life – my hours are supposedly 9:00 to 5:15 but I actually get into work between 7:30 and 8:00 most days just so that I can have a clear run at things – and I can get more done in that uninterrupted hour than in the rest of the day – take yesterday, for example – by 9 o’clock I had assessed two cases, written up the reports (90 wpm typing!) and four letters – I only managed to finish off one more case between 9 and 5.
I listen to the Today programme as well, but obviously, I miss the “fun” bits!
