All writers’ have our own particular habits and preferences as regards how we write – Philip Pullman describes how he writes in biro on A4, narrow ruled, feint lined paper, before typing it up. I write in ink, on paper whilst me mum (who also writes) composes it straight onto the computer. I’m about to get myself a laptop (secondhand and – thankfully – for free) on which I will be able to write, but will I take to this new form of recording my creativity? Time for a poll, a little survey, me thinks…
My writing habits change depending on circumstances. I used to write *everything* by hand and it took me a while to adjust to ‘writing’ straight onto the computer, but it seems to work for me…When I do write by hand, I use a gel pen, which is smoother and easier to use than either a fountain pen or ordinary biro.
you really don’t have enough options …
I like using a pencil (in fact, that’s necessary if you’re writing in the rain) — and I compose (as well as paper and/or computer) on my Palm Pilot — which combines useful aspects of handwriting with never, ever having to type anything up.
And I do use a quill pen, dipped in scented ink, sometimes. It’s such a pick-me-up 🙂
