Okay, so I didn’t capture it, so much as visited it, and strictly speaking it’s not a castle, although it looks like castle, with arrow holes and battlements and everything, but then they did need some where to shoot any toll-avoidees, and it is called a castle — Shane’s Castle.

Yes, I went to visit lekythen and her family’s project. The day didn’t start quite as planned…

Firstly I didn’t extract myself from my bed quite as early as I’d meant, and consequently didn’t get quite the long walk with the dogs as I had thought I’d might. This said, it was an absolutely gorgeous, warm, sunny morning, and I ended up meeting two lots of neighbours both with two dogs a piece, and an almighty rumpous ensued…

Then I drove to Devizes, made very good time and managed to avoid any more encounters with Shinook helecopters on Salisbury Plain, then took me a further 20 minutes to get through Devizes, to discover, on phoning that JJ had had a bit of a sleepness night, overslept and forgotten that I was coming. Wanting to salvage something from the day I drove on to Avebury, met up with JJ who gave me three fine (copies) of her work (you can see them here and here) and then we went off to see the Avebury ring, and wondered at the devotion those ancient people must have had to dig those ramparts and errect those stones … that’s some devotion!

After soup and a roll at a local pub we headed off back down to Devizes and I got the guided tour of the work in progress that is their new home. It’s a small castle, but a big home in comparison to say … my house in Cypress Gardens…
