Bit of a traumatic episode of The Archers, for Greg Turner the gamekeeper has only gone and committed suicide. Yup, after suffering from depression for months, and then more recently have his girlfriend (and daughter of the local organic farmers) Helen Archer move out a few weeks ago, he’s finally done himself in. He’s left his dog apparently to the under keeper, William Grundy and it was Brian Aldridge that found him in the Shepherd’s hut.

Of course, you can tell how the producers really feel about the death of the character with what they do with the closing titles. When John Archer went and turned a tractor over and had it roll on top of him whilst he was ploughing a field, they did the radio equivalent of cut to black and rolled the credits over silence. With Greg’s suicide though? No, they had Brian come out the hut, tell Will “He’s dead”, we heard some birds singing away for a few seconds and then Tum de tum de tum te tum tum… off bounces the theme tune in it’s usual spritely, jovial fassion!

RIP Greg Turner…
