Jó estét!
After my excitement the other day that the Hungarian for cheese was sjat, I’ve now come across the Hungarian for a newspaper. All together now…
újság pronounced: oo-shaag
(that would be a tabloid then would it?!!)
Viszlát!

nagyon jo’!
close! where are you learning this?
of course it’s sajt, not sjat (the j is a y sound, and so it comes before the t).
similarly, u’jsa’g is “ooy-shag,” not just oo-shag. but yes :). “u’j” means “new.”
one of my favorite words to say:
szobafoglalas. there are accents in there, but i don’t remember them, which is bad of me. it means room reservation. so-ba-foag-la-lash. “szoba” (soba) is “room.”
vislat! (i am too lazy to find accents, although what i’m writing is technically quite wrong with out them.)
Re: nagyon jo’!
Me? I learning this here.
Damn, I remembered how to say sjat but forgot how to say it.
Thanks for the info as regards newspaper, I think I can now say Yes, No, Pleas, Thankyou, Hello (at different times of the day) and count to 20… ^__^
Re: nagyon jo’!
you can count to 20! without looking? i don’t think i can even count to 20 anymore. egy ketto harom negy … um…. egy ketto harom negy ot? um…tiz? umm… drat.
i say koszonom all the time. less than i used to. my girlfriend learned how to say szivesen in response.
god i miss hungarian. tell my old hungarian prof that she should email me back!!!
Re: nagyon jo’!
egy, ketto, harom, negyu, ot, hat, het, nyolc, kilenc, tiz, tizenegy, tizenketto, tizenharom, tizennegyu, tizenot, tizenhat, tizenhet, tizennyolc, tizenkilenc, husz
I had to look up eight and nine, as I always get them the wrong way round, and I couldn’t remember how to spell it!
Re: nagyon jo’!
hat het, yes of course. if i’d gotten hat-het i might have been able to finish. no -u on negy, though.
i took a 4-week intensive hungarian class to finish my degree last summer. i love learning languages & my teachers was the best ever. also i visited hungary for a week a couple years ago. and i have a livejournal friend who lives there!
Re: nagyon jo’!
I’m beginning to see a theme developing here. I go to Iceland and you have a livejournal friend already there … I go to Hungary, yup, and you guessed it… *grins*
So what should I definitely make sure I see in Budapest when I’m there (I’m going to be there for four days before heading up to a little village in the north that doesn’t appear to be on any of the maps)?
And before you say, after this I shall make sure that you at least will get a postcard! I’m assuming the one from Iceland arrived eventually…
Re: nagyon jo’!
Apologies if you’ve already told me this, but how come you so much Hungarian? It’s not the most obvious language to know considering it seems to be related to virtually no other language…
