Yesterday we had a virus rampant on the computer networks at work. Apparently it had been sitting dorment for a couple of months before attacking and shuttting down all the Windows 2000 computers (the older bulky machines are Win2K rather than the newer flat screen WinXP) – it also shut down all network drive access which kind of stuffed us doing any work yesterday (with the exception of logging on articles to the net-based JPS system).
The odd thing about all of this is that when confronted by a busy day (even if it’s a busy day of boring tasks) I am far more productive than if I have a slack day. Before anyone jumps up and says, doh, yes, of course, let me explain…
On a slack day, I will faff, and procrastinate and twiddle my thumbs and get bored, fidget and whine. In short, nothing will get done, not even personal websurfing. On a busy day, I will do far more personal websurfing, I will multi-task it with emailing and work, and yet I will still do all of this and all the work I have to do.
In short, I am a more productive worker when I am busy, and I can multi-task it with my own *fun* tasks. Take a way the *fun* tasks and I will piss away the time and not do anything. I guess it’s the two sides of the brain thing again, and when back at school and college where I would watch films and television whilst doing my art work … and essays…
Odd.
