I find it hard to believe that it is now twenty years since Band Aid/Live Aid. I find it hard to believe that a number of people who will read this do not remember it themselves. But it’s true. It’s true, and its scary. Not least that you would have thought that twenty years on, the world would have found a way to avoid the need for more of these.
I don’t think I ever got myself a copy of the single. Where I grew up we didn’t have much in the way of record stores. There would have been a piddly little WHSmiths, a Woolies, and a couple of independent music shops as big as a small front room – I think the town sold out damn quickly. I certainly remember some of my brother’s mates taping copies and selling them at a stall at the school’s Blue Peter Bring’n’Buy sale before marching down to Oxfam to hand in the proceeds…
