A difficult this week. With the exception of week two we have had the same model – Patty – for every session. Tonight it was the return of week two’s flabby man with the Margaret Thatcher nose. Actually as I was drawing the first two ten minute sketches, the comment about Simon’s drawing in that earlier session about how he had strangely drawn Thatcher came to mind – particularly with the nose, my drawings were going that way…
Then a couple of five minute poses. Here it seemed to all go to pot. Am I now taking backward steps…?
Our tutor, Jane, likes these ones, and so I present to you two series of three 2-minute sketches…
And thus we come to tonights longer piece: the male nude reclining. Lots of foreshortening, some tone, and maybe a touch of shading.
oh wow these bring back so many memories from art school and short poses and drawing faster than i could think…
these look really great, except that it seems to me that you’re concentrating so much on the face. myself, i never drew faces in figure drawing classes – or if i did they were the last detail i added. anyway – i’m not suggesting you leave out the face entirely, but i think these drawings could be really strengthened by more attention to the figure and leaving the face a little sketchier.
i really love the detail of the feet and hands on that last drawing, btw. absolutely fantastic.
Thank you. This is the kind of advice I think I need. I hadn’t noticed me focusing on the face that much, but now you mention it … something for me to think about definitely.
Thanks!
no problem! it’s nice to put my million dollar art school education to use once in a while 🙂
As regards your million dollar art school education … is that how you know Megan? I seem to be developing some fascinatingly odd yet wonderful degrees of separation on my friends list… ^__^
no, i met megan via livejournal and then met her in person in new york [twice!]. also, i know bára through my husband, kári. they went to school together and became friends and such. in moving here, i’ve acquired a lot of his friends out of necessity and because they’re good people. i did meet kári at college tho!
