It’s Wednesday and night, and yes, I know, the art classes have ended now, but I couldn’t resist… I attempted my first (I think first ever) self-portrait!

this is really nice — you have such a way with ink washes! the shadows and highlights are great. and you’ve captured a resemblance as well 🙂
Thank you. Looking back on it now from another day, I haven’t done myself any favours. My face isn’t actually that round. I need to squidge in the sides of my head a bit…
But a promising start, yes! ^__^
i think it would help to pay attention to proportion… on the human face, the eyes are half way down the face, even with the ears. [not above!], the space between the eyes is equal to the width of the eye itself and both eyes are equal in width. and the corners of the mouth are even with the inside corners if each eye.
I knew who it was straight away! (even before I’d finished scrolling down the whole picture).
Yay! I’m so happy to see your progress. You’re doing really well. Go Thomas!!
You could try a different method of sketching, such as pencil, or colour pencil, or an ink pen and then add the ink wash. There seems to be a conflict to me between where you are wanting to use line (e.g. around your eyes) and where you are applying tone, and using a different tool for each might help define what you are trying to achieve (i.e. is it a study in light, or a study in line?)
That said there’s no right or wrong way, so whatever you do, keep sketching.
