I got up early today. I say early, but I mean with my alarm instead of at some indeterminate time afterwards. Alarm went off at 6 o’clock and I lay in bed and listened to the first fifthteen minutes of Today, including the weather report, getting up to shower when the boring business news came on. Following this I washed and dressed and actually hung the clothes up straight away rather than leaving them on the back of the chair till later, before having breakfast. My car is still at the garage having its new clutch fitted, so I had to wait for Julian to drive by and collect me…

I read some of the paper and then had a play of my flute – Fauré’s Pavanne which I last played almost five years ago, badly – I managed to play now, quite well. It was a very nice, relaxing start to the day. It reminded me of the scene at the end of Before Sunrise – just before sunrise when Julie Dephy’s and Ethan Hawke’s characters encounter the early morning harpiscord player in Vienna.

I must try and do this again. On a normal day when I’m making my own way to work…
