Took myself off to see Miss Potter the new bio-pic of Beatrix Potter’s life. It’s was good. I really enjoyed it. It’s what I woiuld describe as little film, and a nice film. Beautifully shot of course, and beautiful locations with good acting, I found that Renée Zellweger stuck the right balance between of looks and character to create a spririted, imaginative and feisty young woman who was not the great classical beauty. Ewan McGregor too, was amazing, in fact you couldn’t tell that it was he if you didn’t know – which is always the sign of a good actor.
I was a bit unsure about the way that they animated some of Beatrix’s drawing and the brief scene involving her parents going out for the evening in a pumpkin carriage pulled by mice; they seemed unnecessary elements – like the filmakers were unsure that we would ‘get’ her sense of imagination. Also, whilst fun, they detracted from an otherwise ‘straight’ film.
On balance though I can forgive the film it’s faults for the quintessential charm that it had, and the pleasure that it gave me to watch. A good evening…
