News that the sequels to Philip Pullman’s Northern Lights may not now be made disturbs me somewhat. Granted, they messed around with the story and changed the ending (although reports have it that the ending was to be moved the second film to make a more optimistic ending to the first), but it was still very well made, and faithful to ‘the world’.

If it is true that further films are not to be made because of religious objections then this appalling. Are the (predominantly American) religious folk so unsure of their own faith that they feel they must quash anything which dares to question it? I am not against them having their own faiths and choosing not to see certain films or read certain books because of it, but to wield such power as to scare off the making film adaptations of damn good stories because their faith is wrong on every level.
