The end-of-summer bank holiday brings us another fine, sunny, warm day. Spurred on by something we saw last night on Britain From Above we decide to head down to Wantage and the Oxfordshire-Wiltshire border to visit the White Horse at Uffington.

It’s busy at the White Horse – many families out with their kites, flying them from the long meadow grass. The air is clear and we can see for miles across the Oxfordshire plain to the Chiltern Hills in the far corner. After our picnic lunch we take the nearby Ridgeway for a mile or two to see Wayland’s Smithy – an ancient burial chamber within a wooded copse of beech and oak trees.
