This post began life in a comment to a recent post by Helen; one that made me consider art vs. craft of writing a novel. I think that I too might have payed too much attention to doing something different craftwise when writing The End of All Worlds.

Writing this novel grew out of a style I developed when writing Flyht, which in turn developed from a screenplay I wrote and thus the present tense style. With the present tense and the fast-changing, inter-cutting scenes, I thought I was doing something exciting and new with the story…

It turns out that I was actually just writing a good story which was completely unreadable. And it took until I started working on Mr Tumnal and the decision write for a while in past tense for me to realise my folly. Hopefully, this will be a break-through moment for me.
