511208Lark Rise to Candleford  by Flora Thompson

I always new that the book of Lark Rise to Candleford was completely different to the Sunday night TV series, but other than that I didn’t know what to expect…
What you get is memoir of Flora/Laura looking back on life growing up in rural Oxfordshire but from an early to mid-twentieth century viewpoint. I was expecting a series of short stories but what you get is a picture of different ways of life so each chapter goes back and forth through the same timeframe.

When you read Dickens, or other similar Nineteenth century novel you get all the story but you tend to see it through modern eyes. In Lark Rise to Candleford you get a real feel for, and an understanding of what it’s like to live there at that time. I found it quite wonderful and interesting to read.
