I’ve got high hopes that little Pepper will. After all he’s six years old and hasn’t been used to a cat flap and now he seems to getting used to it. I’ve seen him go in the garden before so I know he can (unfortunately I don’t believe cat pee is that good a fertiliser for my plants?!!) – at some point I shall take the plunge and remove the litter tray, but till then…

In that case you should be on to a winner, assuming you can teach your kitty to prefer to go outdoors rather than use the litter (or the space where the litter was).
