Well, you see, it is only after attempting to write a novel and failing dismally that one can truly say one is not a storyteller. It’s quite a relief really, knowing that one of life’s creative burdens has been well and truly shrugged off…

but…it’s not exclusively my story

Now look, you saying that just makes me want to hear the story even more! And as for not being a storyteller, I seem to recall a conversation way back when I had the corridor seat, that you were writing a novel (or a play – it might have been a play…).

Failing that, what you need is a storyteller to tell your story: Know any storytellers who might be able tell the story of the artist within…?

Yes, I did. In fact since I left school at 16 and didn’t go to uni until I was 23 I had rather a lot of time out between school and uni. Of course there is a story to tell, and it would be exceedlingly long, but…it’s not exclusively my story, and I am not a story teller, so it cannot be told.

Unemployed and Dreadlocked in 1992 would be a feasible title; in the cupboards of my mind however that section of my life resides in a box marked “The Wilderness Years”.

So, did you have some time out before school and brookes? What were you doing in the unemployed and dreadlocked year of 1992? Me thinks there might be a story to tell – and the title – it has to be Unemployed and Dreadlocked in 1992!

1992? Where was I? Well, in March 1992 (ie. the 91-92 academic year) I was in my first year at uni, by which I mean, I had arrived in the (slightly unpreposessing) Cheshire field at the (then) Crewe+Alsager College of Higher Education, soon to be Crewe+Alsager Faculty of Manchester Polytechic, and a little later, Crewe+Alager Faculty of the Manchester Metropolitan University.

Not many photos actually, as it always seemed to me behind the camera, but I’ll see what I can find rooting about in the Shepherd Archives later… 😉
