How much do you recommend for me? Are you going to post about what you saw (and what I missed out on) last weekend? Why have an LJcut saying “Secret” when there’s no story behind it??? Grrrr.
The building I used to work in was exactly across the (little tiny road) from that off-licence in Percy Street. Our landlord kicked us out in December 2000 (when the lease ran out) and would not extend for another 3 months (because he was refurbishing the building), so we had to decamp to temporary offices in Victoria, prior to moving to our new jobs around the great metropolis (and our building was Metropolis House, I’ve just remembered!). Anyway, I told a colleague about your Estonian liquor, and he ventured down there the other day and said that our old building is still closed up – 3 years later! I know what the rents are like in the Oxford Street area – that landlord has lost millions over the past few years.
I used to see lots of famous people down there – many supermodels (because Charles Worthington, the hairdresser, was across the street – £250 for a haircut and blowdry!!!). I used to see Griff Rees-Jones and his sideick (whose name I’ve temporarily forgotten – the one who was fat – actually, he looked big and overweight on tv but was actually quite small and not particularly overweight in real life – oh yes, Mel Smith – “Not the Nine O’Clock News”) all the time, because their production company offices were down the (very short) street. John Peel would eat with various DJs at the restaurant on the corner. I used to be quite amused by him pontificating while the rest of them hung on to every word (and believe me, he took the piss quite a bit).
