So the thing is is the reverse V-sign of that, the one that Churchill used for Victory and hippies use for Peace – is that related in some way to the other one? And if so which came first. Was the *polite* one in reaction to the one used by the English in the Hundred Years War? …or did that come first…?

…or is there no relation whatsoever?

The English archers were feared and loathed by the French, and when captured would have their bow fingers removed so they couldn’t shoot. Hence the V sign became a sign of defiance across the fields.
