The other thing is that of course you’re not *obliged* to act on anyone’s comments, if you don’t agree with them. Just make sure that you’re not disagreeing because s/he’s pounced on a particular ‘baby’ of yours – it’s sometimes the things we disagree in a critique with most violently that turn out to be the things we most need to change…That’s happened to me more times than I care to remember :-/

I think my over riding thoughts about this review are, yeah I get that – you’re right, no I disagree, and wow thank you in equal measure. Just a shame that first two add up to two thirds. Then again, it’s maybe only one third that I disagree with, but then that’s what’s this game is all about – producing something, gathering feedback, thinking about it, weighing it up, following some of it, following your intuition with other bits.

On the whole, though, I think it’s a fair review, and the fact that s/he has gone into so much detail is really – from your point of view, though it might not feel like it right now! – a plus point. Better that than a superficial skim-read or a meaningless pat on the back.

Yeah, I know – I *really* know!! – that it can be a bit *ouch* when someone seems to find so many negatives, but this person has brought up some important points that are key to making your novel attractive to a publisher. And, as we all know, a competent, even good, novel isn’t enough – it must seduce the publisher.
