Dan and Kirstie from the 4bar Collective showed up to record us for Track V of their project that sees them tour the country (the world too!) recording musicians wherever they may be playing or singing loops of four bars of music which they then take away and put together with other four bar loops to make a track of its own….

In total, the band laid down six 4-bar loops for the project; five sectionals and one full-band conclusion, although exactly how they will come together in the final piece is anybody’s guess. Our conductor Neil, has already contributed to Track II, and this can be seen here:

We welcomed Jenny back to the band. Jenny was one of the first flutes along with Hilary when I joined (along with Rhiannon and Linnette on second). We were trying to remember tonight when it was that she left the band – think it may have been before we all decamped from the condemned band hut in favour of the town music centre (from which we were evicted for … umm … making too much noise?!?), before ending up in the school.

However, in the intervening time Jenny’s had three children, one of which is eight! Is it really 12 years now, that I’ve been at Abingdon Concert Band. I guess I have got married and published a book…

Just the one piece, Beauty and the Beast and it wasn’t too beastly. I think I need to be more confident and blow out more and that *should* give me better tone and hopefully people will notice (in a good way).

I’m just pleased I did it. Kind of a brave thing to pick up the smallest instrument in the band and play something no one else is playing! Or at least I think it is! πŸ™‚

Playing carols in the cold is the perfect start to the festive season and that Christmas is here. This year, for me, it really is here, as I am on holiday now through to the New Year.

Quite why the players of flutes choose to play what is essentially a tube of cold metal which they press to their lips in the freezing cold is beyond me (hey, I’m one of them!), for it was flippin’ freezing today, if beautifully clear and bright – that kind of perfect midwinter’s day. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, even if has taken a while to thaw out and get warm again!

In the attrative Park Road location of St Michael and All Angels Church in Abingdon we heralded in the festive season with carols and Christmas joy and more. Cats and waltzes in the shorter first half gave way to Leroy Anderson’s A Christmas Festival and Philp Sparke’s Veni Emmanuel – technically challenging but I think we just about pulled it off…

Certainly, our little band managed to get, possibly our first, standing ovation.
