The day after the weekend before

1. Firstly, happy birthday to my brother.

2. It’s a gorgeous, sunny day today; bright and warm and nice. Just the kind of day to have a nice bicycle ride into work. Well, that was the plan. I was near to the ringroad when my car broke down. Something went ‘ping’ and shortly after my chain came off. I tried to get it back on, but it wouldn’t stay. I think the wheel bearings might have gone â the back wheel is rocking awfully. So I had to walk my silver steed all the way back the Park & Ride, lock it up to the back of my car get the bus into work.

3. I’m going to see Cats for the third time tonight (just one short of Jane’s record. I also get to see Em tonight!

Bike rides and casseroles

Upon returning from Wisley I fixed my puncture^* – the first on my new bike, the bike that is approaching its first birthday^† – and then we went out for a cycle ride around the block. By ‘block’ I mean half a mile or something down Drift Road, through the woods and back round through the village, stopping off at the little shop for supplies of tea. We get home via a shorter if muddier diversion which caused us having to wash down the wheels of our bikes before allowing them back into the house.

Now we are settling back and watching some tele whilst we wait for the casserole to cook. Vegetable in nature, we had so much that the lid was sitting an inch or more proud of the dish, but its cooked down now. Smells yummy!

^*Makes mental note to buy a new repair kit as I only have one patch left…

^‡We are never going to be able throw out that bike!

Of waistlines, shirts, and handsignals…

Regular readers of these pages will know that I have been managing to lose a small amount of weight recently, thanks mainly to cycling (ie. an increase in exercise). I was pleased therefore, to discover today that it is not just the lbs that I have been shifting. I now have incontrovertible proof that I am also seeing a retreat of my tummy.

This morning I was able to put on again, for the first time in a while one of my favourite shirts! Yay! Yay! And thrice yay!!

I’m glad I’m cycling again. It’s fun. I am amazed though, at just how unaware most drivers are to what simple signals mean. Wouldn’t you have thought that if you see someone cycling along with their right arm outstretched at full stretch then that would mean that said cyclist would like to turn right? Sadly it seems not.

Sopping

The past couple of days I’ve been working extra time up to give me time to leave earlier on Friday for the weekend. Today, I made an error in judgement in doing so. It had been raining on and off (mainly on) all day, but at 5pm, just as I was leaving the rains really did come down in a stonking great thunderstorm of a deluge.

I did have my waterproof jacket and trousers (the latter still stained with Icelandic mud) and this did keep me mostly dry, ending up just a little wet ‘around the edges’…

…that is apart from my feet. Within seconds of being out in the rain, my feet were squelching in little pools of water inside my shoes as I peddled through the streets.

Back at the Park&Ride I took off my shoes and poured out the water, and removed my socks and wrung them out.
