Upon investigation to get it fixed it turns out that its not that the 18 carat white gold from Ernest Jones is actually not that great. After it pinged again this week we have decided to buy a new ring. Today I went to Biagio’s in Bicester to collect the new ring – very similar but solid gold and altogether a much better made ring. We shall get the original ring mended in such a way as it is wearable on high days because it is, for all its faults, is still very special.

Em of course, new that this ring was coming, so I bought her the vase she had seen in the antique shop on Saturday, and have made an arrangement of it with a single red rose in it and the ring, all wrapped up, on the table for when she gets home in a few minutes.

Romantic gesture, yes, but practicality no. Despite measuring the finger I got the ring completely and utterly the wrong size. Emma took it in to the jewellers in Amersham today to see if can be made smaller … seven sizes smaller!!
