Great Aunt Blanche and Gunning King

We have a portrait in our house of Great Aunt Blanche. To me she would have been Great great aunt Blanch as she was my Granpy’s aunt. Its a very good charcoal sketch and we’ve always known that the artist was apparently a member of the Royal Academy but we’ve not known much more than that. Blanche Geraldine Powney (1874–1952?) herself was married to a antique dealer in Colchester and we used to have some nice bits of furniture that she left my Granpy. This week, my Mum has discovered the identity of the artist, Gunning King, who was indeed a member of the Royal Academy and has quite a collection of paintings out there. I particularly like this painting of Corfe Castle, where some of my other family come from…

Once every ten years

In a BBC Radio 4 Tracing Your Roots census special, they gave a very cool idea, that, before you send off your form, you photocopy it and keep it safe to hand down through the generations so that your own family at least don’t have to wait until 2111 to see it! I’m going to do this as I think it is a really neat idea.

Some people don’t approve of the time and money and nature of the census. I’m not one of them. As someone who has made great use of the past censuses when looking up my own and Emma’s family trees I know what value they are to have. I shall thereby sending my back, as fully as intended, to be counted. In filling it in, I took a geeky pleasure in noting down my profession of Web Designer. Surely that has got to be one of the high growth job titles in the last ten years! I don’t know what Philip but down for my job title on his his form ten years ago, but if he put Electronic Content Quality Controller then future historians will see just what blip in history and a transient thing that was.

Into the past

With the coming of the new series of BBC1âs Who Do You Think You Are?, Emma has been looking again into her family tree. Whilst she has been delving into Genes Reunited and the UK Census Online, finding all manner of Jefferyâs that she was previously unaware and splurging credits on facsimile copies of census returns. As quickly as sheâs been finding them Iâve been splicing them into my Brotherâs Keeper database. Iâve also been filling out my family tree and getting quite into the genealogical research.

In the afternoon, faced with the prospect of another (unexpected) month in my âickle house, Em decides that there are some more things she would like to get from Braywood Orchard (and also to check up on her stuff) so we head out to Berkshire. Everythingâs fine and we pick up a few things before going for a walk at Burnham Beeches and then â unscheduled â dropping in on her parents to eat some locally bought fishânâchips and report the details of the weekendâs genealogical research.

So ‘Melanie’ wasn’t spam, but indeed is my second cousin once removed, and found me via ye olde interweb. How cool is that? On my line, and if you take a look at Sheptree you will see this, Elizabeth is the end of the line for me, moving on, so that’s quite exciting, to see another branch of the tree…

A bit far fetched I know, but we share (I’m sure) Soloman & Sarah POWNEY, You go down through John Powney and my line goes through James Powney (then his son John,then his daughter Elizabeth, Edward powney, Frederick Herbert, Winifred, Nadine then myself).
My Mum is your sixth cousin thats how I become once removed

Don’t suppose you would know if Soloman had any siblings?
What sort of paperwork have you got regarding Soloman (if any)?
Have you any other POWNEY contacts?
