Whilst I was there one of the anthropologist lecturers came in for his lunch, heated up his soup and then nervously came and brought it to the table, positioning it as far as possible from me. He confessed that he was scared that he was going to splatter my drawings.

With these two, and the one that I have done tonight of Nelly’s bar in Reykjavik (in the story, it is in the basement of a bar like this where Hanna Katla rehearses with her band mates), I have completed 25 illustrations now, with just 11 more to go. I think that’s the total anyway – need to double check precisely how many chapters are (there may actually be 38…), and I’m done. 🙂

Actually I’ve always wanted illustrations in my books – the early ‘novel’, Ruins of the Old which I wrote aged 17/18 and submitted to my A-Level English as coursework and bound for my A-Level Art, was an illustrated thing. Books for all ages always used to be illustrated and I think its wrong that nowadays books with illustrations should be reserved for children.

But in this ambition I have always had a problem in that I cannot draw people reliably well, and when doing illustrations, the ability to draw people is, what you might say, vital. I’ve also had the idea that the kind of illustrations suited to The End Of All Worlds would be woodcuts, and I’ve been looking forward to getting to grips with this technique and printing them using my Adana Eight-Five presses. But woodcut design is a difficult skill to learn and I didn’t think I would have time to learn the art of woodcut, print the woodcuts and do enough to accompany each of the chapters in time to go with the story when published (even if I waited five years to have it picked up by a publisher or agency). So I had all but given up on the idea…

However, if I am to publish the book as an eBook on Kindle I need to have a cover for it. In working through a technique for creating a striking cover that works in black and white (essental for eBooks), I have created a cover image that I am happy with. Coupled with this I have recently submitted my application for 10 ISBN numbers to call my own. When you apply for your first set of ISBN numbers you have to submit the title information for was for my Mum’s book, The Underhill Buttons, and there is a space on the form for, if applicable, including the number of illustrations. This question hit me, hard. I’m currently looking at doing small illustrations to head up each of my chapters. The technique involves using my brush pen to trace the outline of the main drawing and then fill in the shading and add other elements as required. So far three down and 33 to go, it seems to be a technique that is working…

There was an exhibition of etchings in the foyer to the theatre last night, and it made me remember how much I love printmaking. I began to dream again of the ‘print room’ that could be should we be lucky enough to get the Stratton Audley house, and if I was able to buy myself an intaglio press. I’ve also begun to see more clearlythe kind of lino/woodcut illustrations that I would like to have to accompany my novel.

2. Emma and I have had a nice walk in the snow at Stowe, and discuss, amongst other things, my novel, and printmaking. I’m now fired up with a desire to get myself equipped and get back to the inky stuff! 😉

I needed to go into town anyway and collect some more inserts for my photo albums. It wouldn’t have been right not to buy Philip Pullman’s new book, Once Upon a Time in the North – another companion piece to his His Dark Materials it is the story of how Iorek Brynsson met Lee Scoresby, and it has the most wonderful of woodcut illustrations by John Lawrence.

I’m going to have to interrupt my current reading to devour this novella.
