Following on from the annual January Playing Day and to celebrate Abingdon Concert Band’s 30th Anniversary we all met again with two conductors in some unbelievably swish private prep school just outside Abingdon for a day of play. With six flutes amongst us, I spent most of the time playing piccolo, which was good fun. Weirdly playing picc improves my playing as you can’t play picc unconfidently… 😉

From the playing day, I headed into Oxford, and more specifically Jericho to meet up with Jane and Melissa for more play – or rather, The Play. Having revised Between Floors the ending is still not quite working, but we think we know what we have to do now.

Got home a bit after 8pm, and was able to water the garden and pod some peas and beans to go with my steak supper. Delicious! Oh, and what a freakily, scary episode of Doctor Who it was – really, proper scary! If I’m honest, then I’ve never actually been scared by the programme before; never had that behind-the-sofa moment, but tonight’s really got me. Don’t blink. Whatever you do, just don’t blink…

Well, this weekend has been one of those. There’s been no frittering of time doing really stupid, time-wasting things. It’s just been all, most definitely, good.

This afternoon, I headed down to Oxford, parking & riding into town (on my silver steed) to meet up in the cafe in St Mary’s Crypt for another play meeting. We spend most of the time working through Act Four, and it is getting so tantalisingly close to being fiinished. Then I headed back home to do a bit more writing, and check some emails, speak to my parents before they jet off to America for a bit, and suddenly it was 7 o’clock. And so I headed back into Oxford, this time driving into the centre to meet up with Clare for a meal, and a chat, and a kind of mini-leaving do. Very pleasant evening. Friends are nice. 🙂

Now, it’s time for bed, before waking up for my last day of paid employment. It’s going to be a funny ol’ day tomorrow, I can tell…

Fish4Jobs in partnership with Verticality are currently my two best friends. It was through them both that I had the buzz of the interesting Cambridge designer job (which sadly came to nothing). Yesterday I was fishing through the former and came across an ad for a Senior Web Designer in Oxfordshire – what the hell I thought and applied – after all I only need to upload my CV and hit send. 😉 Yesterday afternoon, the guy at Verticality phoned me back, we had a bit of a chat. This position really was for someone a bit more senior than me but he liked the sound of me and my skills and asked if I would like to put through anyway maybe for a more junior position. So anyway, he went off and contacted them and they said yes, so he got back in contact with me to say that’s what he was doing. Don’t know yet what if anything will come of this, but you know, it’s defininitely worth sometimes going for everything.

2. I need cat food. Well, Bella and Arthur need cat food. Today I ran out of it and had to nip round to the local shop and get some Go-Cat to tide me over until I get to pet shop and can get some Pro-Plan or James Wellbeloved science diet. Your off-the-shelf Whiskers and Go-Cat is expensive! 89p for a box of biscuits which is going to last next to no time. The science diets, although you buy them in bigger quantities are no more (or not significantly more) expensive, and they are heaps better for your pusscat than the supermarket alternatives.

3. Chapter 6, the closing chapter of Part One of my novel went into review at CritiqueCircle yesterday. I’ve already had three crits on it, all very complimentary, one I think did actually use the words ‘un-put-downable’ and apparently they sat down with a cup of coffee to read it, and when they got round to drinking it, the coffee was cold! 🙂

4. Amy was not at wind band tonight. All my other fellow flautists were though, but it did leave me playing solo piccolo. All things considering, I did pretty well. I just have to remember to breath from my diaphram and blow confidently…

5. I have a Play Meeting on Sunday. Hopefully we might get it to the point of then needing to find sacrifices volunteers to read the parts so that we can get a feel for how it works.

Had a successful batch at improving chapter three of my novel, before heading into Oxford this afternoon for a play-meeting with Jane and Melissa. I say meeting, but in fact it was a Christmassy gathering with mulled wine and cookies during which we did the first full read through of the whole play.

And it’s good! Actually, it’s damn good. It’s a true something-about-nothing farce with a bit of murder and intrigue and is quintessentially English (complete with knowing nods to the Wisden’s Cricketers Almanac). With two Dell Inspiron laptops and and an iMac, the scene was something of a technological version of the Oxford Inklings… 😉
