The snowfairy had been in the middle of the night and delivered me this cheerful chappy during the night.

I found out later that emej had been outside in her pyjamas and wellies at half past midnight last night fashioning the little man after I had admitted to regretting not getting round to making a snowman this year.

This evening, after I got back from work I decided, with a forecast of rain and a thaw, now might be my last opportunity, so I made a companion for Emma’s, even if it was dark. Hopefully he might be still up for taking daylight pictures tomorrow morning.

I feel better now! 🙂

When it came to this morning there was just the lightest of dustings left on the ground from yesterday evening and I could definitely have driven in to work, but I knew this would be silly. Whilst a lot of people seemed to be commenting online about how much of a fuss over nothing everyone was making of it, I knew that it wasn’t the getting to work so much as the getting back from work would be the problem.

By 8 o’clock the snow had started to fall, and by 10 o’clock the inches were mounting up. by 2 o’clock in the afternoon work was beginning to close already because of the weather. I had definitely made the right decision; being far more productive at home than I would have ever have been had I gone into Oxford and spent however long on the road trying to get home again.

When Emma got back from work – her last day at Bicester Vets – we went out again and she drove me to the butchers in Launton to get our meat, I had a walk around the local park in the snow before retreating to the warm indoors to wait for the shopping order to arrive which arrived only 2 minutes late! Tomorrow, we will have to venture out to get our veg from the market, and if we can, a new bale of hay from Fringford. A walk in the snow would be nice. I think my favourite image of the day was the one above of the witchhazel seemingly flowering out of snow.

I love snow. 🙂

Yesterday, Ros and Nick came over for the afternoon with James and Sophie, and we had a nice if bitterly cold walk to our local park and then beyond to Bure Park nature reserve before returning home to the snuggly warmth of our home and a cup of tea and a chat. It was very nice to catch up, and then Ros and Nick left just before the snow began to fall. We had sausages and mash for dinner (no gravy pancakes this week!) and I spent the evening sketching illustrations for the chapter headings of The End Of All Worlds. Scarily I am actually now 12 down of the estimated 36 needed – which is an alarminly large amount of the work already done! 🙂

Today, has been a quieter day. We had a lazy start to the morning, for me porridge for breakfast with cinnamon, blueberries and honey and just a dash of milk, and a read of the Sunday paper before we got moving. After feeding the animals, we had a bit of a walk round the estate, had a spot of lunch, and then went on a drive up to Brill Hill for the view. Now we’re back home to hibernate in front of the fake fire, and I’m about to do some more illustrating…

Next door gazebo has collapsed – nice! I was really looking forward to going out for a nice walk in the snow with Emma and my camera…

We had a good breakfast too, and whilst Emma headed upstairs for a shower I went about washing up. It was during the washing up that I noticed the puddle on the side in the kitchen, and then, the red flashing light on the boiler. I tried restarting it and it seemed to work, but then soon went off again. So we shut everything down and put a bucket in place to gather the drips. Phoned several plumbers, and in the end, signed up to some British Gas thing in order to get a plumber out first thing tomorrow. We’ve had to drain the system and consequently we now have no central heating and no water. Thankfully our electric fire in the lounge is keeping that room okay and the upstairs isn’t too bad.

We’re snuggled up now in the lounge, and hoping that normality will be resumed shortly. Weirdly a friend of mine seems to have exactly the same problem. I hope Caroline manages to get toasty warm again soon!

Over breakfast the snow started coming down, finely but steadily. An hour later and there was a few centimetres and it was still coming down. The carols were called off and we were suddenly left with unexpected bonus time.

It’s a shame, I always look forward to the Christmas carols and with snow on the ground it would have been so nice, but at the same time I was fearing getting back if not getting there. Six hours later and I’m very glad we didn’t go. There’s 8½ inches of snow out there now and it didn’t stop coming down till gone 7pm!

I’ve finished making the brandy chocolate truffles though, and been for a walk with Emma in the fire, and hibernated in front of the (fake) fire. A perfect advent day… 🙂

It does seem that I live in just about the only county in Britain that isn’t currently affected by snow. There’s snow to the north of me, snow to the south of me, snow to the east of me, and snow… Okay, yes, we have a sprinkling of the white here and there but nothing more than an icing sugar dusting of white.

I realise that for many they would rather see the back of the snow and I shouldn’t complain but its so darn beautiful. It also seems to bring out the best in people as they find ways to muddle through their lives and carry on as normal. That said, why on earth should we find ways to carry on as normal. I wish that more people would look honestly at the situation (probably somewhere midway between ‘don’t travel unless you really need to’ and ‘the actual weather in your area’) and make decisions about whether they need to travel. Certainly anyone who can work from home should be allowed and encouraged to, and given the facility to do so where necessary so that the only people on the roads are those who absolutely have no other choice.

And if, after all of this we lose x-number of snow days? Well, so be it. Truth is, in our country, currently and historically we don’t get long periods of severe weather in the winter so it would be ridiculous to resource the infrastructure to cope with this. Of course, if this is a fundamental shift of our environment and it becomes something that lasts for a month or more then yes, the infrastructure needs to change to allow for our lives to continue as they do in other countries. Until then, lets just enjoy the beauty and the wonder in these scenes…

I always knew I would have to take it carefully, but I was expecting somewhat less snow on the major backgrounds than I actually got. In places I trundled along at 20 mph in fourth gear, and it wasn’t until I reached the Oxford city limits that the roads were truly clear and I was able to, accelerate into the 20mph zone.

It was a beautiful drive into work though; country villages and sweeping fields carpeted in winter whiteness…

Our drug overlord neighbours had some difficulty driving through the snow and got stuck, and Emma persuaded me to go out and help, which I did. What a grumpy sod he thought I was. I did let him borrow my spade to dig his way out but he wasn’t appreciative and didn’t say thank you. Whilst I was outside one of our other neighbours returned from trying to go to work. Just reinforced the decision I took yesterday that today was a day for working from home.

~ Waved Emma off into the snow after breakfast as she went to work. I went and fed the chickens and the bunnies who were not sure about the snow.

~ I logged onto my work webmail and sent an email to Win to turn my computer on and then set about trying the fantastic, and free LogMeIn website to gain access to my computer. It worked and I was able to turn my home computer into my work computer with all the access to programmes, network drives, local drives as I would normally. Freaky!

~ As it happened they quickly closed all non-essential buildings and staff. They never said what constituted non-essential but I kind of figured that that was probably me. I went for an explore around the block on a quest for cat litter. I had to go to the Coop in the end, but then got caught in a blizzard on the way home.

The students are all off on holidays, the lecturers are all conspicuous by their absence, and much of the site, in grey gloom, resembles that of a ghost town. It’s weird working somewhere where you get these sudden shifts in activity to non-activity; having worked in offices before I’ve never really experienced that. It’s quite useful though from a point of view of rattling through one’s to do list with no interuptions.

Of course, part of today has been spent watching and waiting for snow…

…which did, in the end come to us; laying an even, if thin, covering of seasonal joy to the roads that was very much appropriate to going round to Lucy’s in the evening to enjoy mince pies, mulled wine and a good Christmas sing song around the piano. 🙂
