3063417What I Was by Meg Rosoff

When I picked up this book to read something about it seemed vaguely reminiscent of I Captured The Castle and not just for its rural, Suffolk setting. The cover (of my addition at least) suggests an ambiguity as to the identity of Finn and one that I enjoyed wondering about although it seems obvious that this is the relationship of two boys…

There is of course a twist in the story, but not one that is entirely unsurprising. What is more surprising, is the final twist to the twist; a turnaround that whilst it is a satisfying and refreshing end to a novel, it also has a personal sadness to it that what you wanted to happen, doesn’t happen? But isn’t that sometimes the way that life is and therefore why in the end this is such a good and clever book?
